The Vale do Jari REDD+ projects, located in the Vale do Jari region between Amapá and Pará, aim to curb deforestation and promote sustainable practices of forest management and agro-extraction. Focusing on local community empowerment, the project values standing forests and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). The initiative enhances local biodiversity and improves community well-being while also trading carbon credits, thus making the activities economically viable. The project is crucial for environmental conservation and socio-economic sustainability of the region.

Deforestation, forest degradation, and changes in land use, including agriculture, contributed to a total of 23% of all accumulated anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world between 2007 and 2016. In Brazil, these activities resulted in 63% of all national emissions in 2015.
Although the Brazilian deforestation rate decreased from 2004 to 2012, these values have risen again in recent years. Therefore, there is an urgent need to enhance socio-economic development alternatives based on the valuation of standing forests, as proposed in REDD+ Projects.
In Vale do Jari, there are various productive activities, ranging from forest management to sustainable agriculture and the extraction of forest products. It is an area of great social and environmental importance that is constantly threatened by human activity. It is in this region and context that the properties of the Jari Group are located, making them of great regional importance.
With the aim of containing the constant threats to the area, the REDD+ Amapá & Pará Projects seek to provide training in sustainable management and agro-extractive production techniques, promoting the well-being of communities and making them partners in the maintenance of forest resources.
The Project is located in the municipality of Almeirim, State of Pará, and borders the State of Amapá to the north. A very important role can be observed in this region for serving as a home to many rural families and as an ecological corridor, having around it several Conservation Units (UCs), possessing a rich biodiversity, diverse plant formations, and species of ecological and social importance.

What are the project SDGs
The project Vale do Jari REDD+ includes 9 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are:
NO POVERTY
Ending poverty in all its forms everywhere. This goal aims to eradicate extreme poverty, promote social and economic inclusion of all individuals, and ensure that everyone has access to basic services such as health, education, and social security. It recognizes that poverty is multidimensional and requires a holistic approach to overcome, addressing not only the lack of income but also the lack of access to essential resources and opportunities.
ZERO HUNGER
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. This goal aims to ensure that all people have access to adequate, nutritious, and sufficient food, eradicate hunger in all its forms, and ensure sustainable agricultural systems that can feed the current and future population in an equitable and environmentally responsible manner. This involves promoting sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening the resilience of food systems, and ensuring equitable access to natural resources and agricultural technologies.
QUALITY EDUCATION
Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to quality education at all levels, from early childhood education to higher education and vocational training. This includes promoting equal access to education, improving the quality and relevance of teaching, and ensuring safe and inclusive learning environments. Additionally, the goal seeks to promote lifelong learning opportunities, recognizing the importance of continuous education for the personal and professional development of people of all ages.
GENDER EQUALITY
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal aims to promote gender equality and eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls. This includes ensuring equal access to educational, economic, and political opportunities, as well as promoting women's participation in decision-making processes at all levels. Additionally, it seeks to eliminate harmful practices such as child and forced marriage and promote access to sexual and reproductive health. SDG 5 recognizes that achieving gender equality is essential for sustainable development and for creating more just and inclusive societies.
AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
Ensure reliable, sustainable, modern, and affordable access to energy for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people have access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources to meet their basic needs such as lighting, heating, transportation, and productive use. This includes promoting access to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and ensuring that the energy transition is made inclusively and equitably, taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable communities. Additionally, it seeks to improve energy efficiency and expand access to energy services in rural and remote areas.
DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. This goal aims to ensure that economic growth is sustainable and inclusive, creating decent jobs and work opportunities for all people. It seeks to achieve full and productive employment and decent work, as well as promote equal opportunities in the labor market, reduce informality, and combat all forms of child labor and forced labor. SDG 8 also encourages the development of policies that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth in sustainable sectors.
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable patterns of production and consumption. This goal aims to promote production and consumption practices that are more resource-efficient, less polluting, generate less waste, and have reduced environmental impact. This includes promoting efficiency in the use of natural resources, reducing waste, adopting cleaner production practices, and implementing sustainable supply chains. SDG 12 also seeks to raise awareness about the environmental and social impacts of unsustainable production and consumption patterns, encouraging the adoption of more sustainable and responsible lifestyles.
CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This goal aims to address the challenges posed by climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to adverse impacts already occurring, and promoting climate resilience. Achieving this goal requires actions at various levels, from local to international, aiming at mitigating emissions, developing adaptation strategies, implementing environmental policies, and mobilizing resources to finance measures to combat climate change. SDG 13 recognizes the urgency of acting to avoid the worst effects of climate change and to protect the environment for future generations.
LIFE ON LAND
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss. This goal aims to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands, as well as the protection of biodiversity and natural habitats. It seeks to promote sustainable land management practices, restoration of degraded ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, combating desertification and land degradation, and preventing species extinction. SDG 15 recognizes the fundamental role of terrestrial ecosystems in the health of the planet, in mitigating climate change, and in human well-being.
