This project consists of a hydroelectric power plant with a total installed capacity of 130 MW, located in the cities of Bento Gonçalves, Nova Roma do Sul, and Veranópolis, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern region of Brazil. The first Kaplan turbine began operation on December 29, 2004, and the second on November 29, 2006.
The project owner is Companhia Energética Rio das Antas - CERAN, which is composed of CPFL Geração de Energia S.A., Companhia Estadual de Energia Elétrica - CEEE, and Desenvix S.A. as shareholders of the company.
The project contributes to sustainable development, as it meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, as defined by the Brundtland Commission (1987). The implementation of hydroelectric plants ensures renewable energy generation, reduces demand on the national electrical system, avoids negative social and environmental impacts caused by the construction of large hydroelectric plants with large reservoirs and fossil fuel thermoelectric plants, and boosts regional economies, increasing the quality of life in local communities. The project is reducing negative environmental impacts and strengthening the regional economy, resulting in better quality of life. In other words, environmental sustainability combined with social and economic justice undeniably contributes to the sustainable development of the host country.
The project's activity reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by avoiding the generation of electricity from fossil fuel sources (and CO2 emissions) that would be generated (and emitted) in the absence of the project. Next, the baseline scenario is identified as the continuation of the current (previous) situation of electricity supplied by large hydroelectric and thermal power plants.
The Monte Claro Hydroelectric Plant is a run-of-river plant that meets all the requirements established by the World Commission on Dams (WCD). The WCD's strategic priorities are:

What are the project SDGs
The project Ceran's Monte Claro Run of River Hydropower Plant CDM Project Activity includes 3 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are:

AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
Ensure reliable, sustainable, modern, and affordable access to energy for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people have access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources to meet their basic needs such as lighting, heating, transportation, and productive use. This includes promoting access to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and ensuring that the energy transition is made inclusively and equitably, taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable communities. Additionally, it seeks to improve energy efficiency and expand access to energy services in rural and remote areas.

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. This goal aims to ensure that economic growth is sustainable and inclusive, creating decent jobs and work opportunities for all people. It seeks to achieve full and productive employment and decent work, as well as promote equal opportunities in the labor market, reduce informality, and combat all forms of child labor and forced labor. SDG 8 also encourages the development of policies that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth in sustainable sectors.

SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. This goal aims to improve the quality of life in urban areas by promoting sustainable urban development and ensuring equitable access to basic services such as adequate housing, public transportation, sanitation, energy, and infrastructure. It also seeks to make cities safer, resilient to natural disasters, and environmentally sustainable by protecting cultural and natural heritage and promoting inclusive economic development. SDG 11 recognizes the crucial role of cities in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals and promoting a more just and sustainable future for all.
